Wānanga Matariki – Deepening Your Understanding
Join us for a two-day, in-person wānanga with Rangi Matamua and Te Aorere Pewhairangi, exploring Māori knowledge of astronomy, with a special focus on Matariki. This wānanga offers a unique opportunity to connect with Matariki and its associated practices in a meaningful way.
Together, we will explore:
- Māori astronomy
- The maramataka
- Environmental indicators, and the Hautapu ceremony.
This is a safe and supportive space to engage with mātauranga Māori through both learning and practical application.
Purpose
The purpose of this wānanga is to support the growth and understanding of Matariki by strengthening knowledge of its observation and practices.
By the end of the wānanga, participants will have:
- A deeper understanding of Matariki its history, significance, and relevance today

Increased confidence in engaging with Matariki ceremonies, including how to
conduct Hautapu - A stronger foundation in Māori astronomy, including the maramataka
- The ability to identify key stars and understand environmental indicators used in Māori astronomy
- Knowledge to support the revitalisation and normalisation of Matariki practices.

Over two days, participants will explore:
- Māori astronomy its origins, purpose, and practices
- Matariki and the Māori New Year
- Hautapu ceremony, including karakia
- Environmental indicators and seasonal markers
- Maramataka
Participants will also receive dedicated learning resources to support their journey beyond the wānanga.
